This is perhaps the biggest reason I write poetry: it is grounding. I have seen it suggested over and over that one of the most effective ways to calm an anxiety attack is to ground oneself in the present by purposefully noting one thing for each of the five senses — something I do for my poetry whenever I write. Poetry is therapy.
